Argument

Piece by piece, brick by brick,
We attempt to close this distance between us.
This chasm has formed, as vast as oceans,
Unencumbered by the boundaries of land.

Inch by inch, step by step,
We mend the wounds that caused us pain.
We bridge the void of silence,
Oft with more silence, for words a blade.

Each statement a piercing projectile,
Intentionally delivered with fatal precision.
The deafening thunder crescendos,
But the ensuing silence is what we hear the clearest.

When the empty casings of spent remarks litter the ground,
When the smoke, thick and black and acrid clears,
When we are at last disarmed and defenseless,
The screaming echoes of nothing demand to be heard.

Now as the tumult settles and casualties accounted for,
We see the only scars we have are self-inflicted.
By trying to hurt each other, we only harm ourselves,
Leaving an emptiness, as black as night, in our eyes.

I reach for you, and you retract,
The verbal assault constructing physical barriers.
A ragged canyon spanning what was once common ground,
And I’ve never felt so far away than I do now in front of you.

Still, piece by piece, inch by inch,
We suture the frayed and tattered edges, our fragile fabric.
We realize a temporary fissure isn’t worth a permanent rift,
Finally, we find our way back—to each other.
